Srinagar — The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has achieved a significant milestone by securing accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its Department of Biochemistry laboratory.
The accreditation, which came after a rigorous assessment of the laboratory's quality management systems, testing procedures and staff competency, makes GMC Srinagar one of the few government medical colleges in the region to achieve this distinction.
"NABL accreditation is a testament to the quality and reliability of our diagnostic services. Patients can now be assured that the test results from our laboratory meet national and international standards," said the Head of the Department of Biochemistry.
The accreditation covers a range of diagnostic tests including blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, lipid profile and thyroid function tests — among the most commonly ordered investigations in clinical practice.
The achievement is particularly significant for public healthcare in Kashmir, where a large proportion of patients depend on government hospitals for diagnostic services. Previously, many patients were forced to seek testing at private laboratories, often at significantly higher costs.
The Principal of GMC Srinagar said the institution is now working towards securing NABL accreditation for its pathology and microbiology laboratories as well, with the aim of making all diagnostic services at the college hospital internationally benchmarked.
