Avalanche Alert Issued For North Kashmir

Srinagar — The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority on Friday issued an avalanche warning for higher reaches of north Kashmir, cautioning that areas above 2,600 metres in Baramulla and Kupwara districts are likely to face medium danger levels over the next 24 hours.

The warning comes after recent snowfall in the upper reaches, which has increased the avalanche risk in vulnerable areas. The authority has advised residents, especially those in remote and high-altitude villages, to remain alert and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone zones.

"We urge the public to strictly adhere to safety guidelines as conditions remain conducive for avalanche activity," an official spokesperson said. "People should avoid unnecessary travel in high-altitude areas and follow regular updates from the disaster management authority."

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has also been put on alert to ensure road connectivity is maintained in areas that may be affected by avalanches or heavy snowfall. Snow clearance machinery has been positioned at key locations along the Kupwara-Tangdhar and Bandipora-Gurez roads.

In recent years, avalanches have caused significant casualties and damage to property in north Kashmir. Last year, several soldiers and civilians lost their lives in avalanche incidents in the region.

The meteorological department has forecast intermittent snowfall in the higher reaches over the next 48 hours, further elevating the risk. Officials have urged local administrations in affected districts to activate emergency response protocols and ensure adequate supplies are available in remote areas.
