Kulgam, May 12: Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shazad Alam today visited the accident-prone Manigam Crossing on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44), a location that has witnessed several tragic road accidents over the past few years, claiming dozens of lives.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed the ground situation and interacted with officials regarding the recurring accidents at the crossing. He stated that wrong-side driving has emerged as one of the major causes behind the increasing number of mishaps in the area.
The DC said that immediate steps including installation of signages, speed breakers, and rumble strips will be taken to reduce the accident graph and enhance road safety for commuters using the busy highway stretch.
Responding to concerns regarding the construction of the approach road at the crossing, the Deputy Commissioner said that the tendering process has already been initiated. However, due to certain technical glitches, the project has witnessed some delay.
He emphasized that road safety engineering plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and said that efforts are being made to ensure proper safety mechanisms are put in place at vulnerable locations across the district.
The Deputy Commissioner was accompanied by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulgam and officers from NHAI during the inspection visit.
