Iran Wants World Cup 2026 Matches Switched from USA to Mexico

Tehran — Iran has formally requested FIFA to relocate its World Cup 2026 group stage matches from venues in the United States to Mexico, citing the ongoing military conflict between the two countries as grounds for the move.

In a letter addressed to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) argued that it would be "unconscionable" for Iranian players and fans to travel to a country that is currently conducting military operations against Iran.

"The safety and dignity of our players, coaching staff and supporters cannot be guaranteed in a hostile nation that is actively engaged in warfare against our country," the FFIRI wrote.

FIFA, which is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico, has acknowledged receipt of the letter and said it is "studying the request in consultation with all relevant stakeholders."

Iran is drawn in Group B alongside England, Wales and the United States, with two of their three group stage matches currently scheduled to be played at venues in the US. The third match is set for a venue in Mexico City.

The request puts FIFA in a difficult diplomatic position. The world football body has historically insisted on keeping politics separate from sport, but the current conflict presents unprecedented circumstances.

Sports analysts note that even if FIFA agrees to relocate the matches, logistical challenges remain significant, given that the tournament is only months away. Mexico has indicated it would be willing to accommodate additional matches if required.

The Iranian football team has continued training despite the conflict, with the coaching staff describing preparation conditions as "challenging but not impossible."
