JKPS to IPS Induction Vacancies Likely to Rise to 10 Amid Retirements

Jammu, Mar 25: The number of vacancies for induction of Jammu and Kashmir Police Service (JKPS) officers into the Indian Police Service (IPS) is likely to increase from eight to ten, following the impending retirement of two IPS officers in April and May.

Official sources told news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC that while eight vacancies have already been identified and necessary formalities, including consent from eligible JKPS officers, have been completed, the delay in convening the final meeting by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) may lead to the addition of two more vacancies.

Sources said the UPSC is expected to hold the meeting shortly with senior officials of the Union Territory, including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police, to finalise the induction process.

Interestingly, some JKPS officers have reportedly declined consent for induction into IPS, preferring to continue under the JKPS promotion framework, where several have already been elevated to positions equivalent to DIG and IGP ranks, including Directors and Commissioners.

It was further learnt that one senior officer, recently promoted as Director under the JKPS promotion policy, is also set to retire this month, and the post will likely be filled as per seniority, subject to the officer’s willingness for IPS induction.

As per the Ministry of Home Affairs, eight vacancies had been determined for the years 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, including carried-forward posts from previous years, with no vacancy allocated for 2022.

Sources added that officers inducted into IPS will be allotted batches from 2015 onwards, depending on availability of vacancies.

Notably, around 44 JKPS officers have been inducted into IPS over the past three years, while no inductions took place between 2011 and 2021 due to various administrative and legal issues.

The recent amendments in the Jammu and Kashmir Police Service Rules have also enabled promotion of JKPS officers to senior ranks equivalent to DIG and IGP, easing stagnation caused by delays in IPS induction, the sources said. (KNC)
